More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older

According to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, there are more than 100,000 people in Japan who are aged 100 or older. This milestone was reached in 2022, marking a significant increase from the 68,000 people who were aged 100 or older in 2007. The ministry attributes this increase to improved healthcare and living standards. The number of centenarians has been rising steadily over the past 15 years, with an average annual increase of 4.8%. The ministry expects the number to continue growing due to the aging population of Japan, where the number of people aged 65 or older is projected to increase to 33% of the total population by 2065.
