Flawed routers flood University of Wisconsin internet time server (2003)

In 2003, a vulnerability in Netgear routers allowed them to flood the University of Wisconsin's internet time server, compromising its accuracy. The issue was caused by a misconfigured SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) client in the routers, which repeatedly queried the time server with incorrect IP addresses, causing it to return incorrect timestamps. The problem was noticed after a user reported a discrepancy in the time on a Unix system at the university. The issue was eventually resolved after a patch was applied to the routers. The routers in question were Netgear's MR814 and DG834G models. The vulnerability was not unique to these models, but rather a design flaw in the SNTP client implementation.
