Using LLMs to trace alchemical knowledge and decode 17th century letters

Researchers are using Large Language Models (LLMs) to analyze 17th century alchemical texts and decode letters written in a cipher. The project, led by researcher Dr. Nicholas Clad, aims to uncover historical knowledge and understanding of alchemy. The team is using the LLM to identify and transcribe handwritten notes, as well as to decipher the cipher used in the letters. The goal is to shed new light on the history of alchemy and its connection to modern chemistry.
