Small undersea volcanoes may unleash outsized tsunamis

New imaging of the Hunga caldera's collapse after an eruption has revealed that small undersea volcanoes may be capable of unleashing massive tsunamis. The research, which analyzed the caldera's collapse in 2014, found that the eruption caused a 10-meter-high tsunami wave to hit the shore on the nearby island of Tonga. This is significant because scientists previously believed that only large, explosive eruptions could generate such massive waves. The study suggests that smaller eruptions at undersea volcanoes could also have devastating consequences. The research was led by a team from the University of Tasmania and was published in the journal Geology.
