This Digital Radio Gets Messages to the World’s Remotest Locations

The Hermes shortwave radio is a digital radio that can send messages to the world's remotest locations. Developed by the University of Twente in the Netherlands, the radio uses a technique called Software-Defined Radio (SDR) to transmit data over shortwave frequencies. This allows it to reach areas with limited or no internet connectivity. The radio is powered by a Raspberry Pi and can be controlled using a smartphone app. It uses a protocol called LoRaWAN to transmit data, which is a low-power, low-bandwidth protocol designed for IoT applications. The Hermes radio has a range of up to 500 km and can operate at frequencies between 3-30 MHz.
