Mathematical Billiards (2024)
Researchers from the University of Heidelberg's Cluster of Excellence 'Constructing the Matter of Mathematical Structures' developed a new approach to mathematical billiards, a field that studies the behavior of balls on a table. The new method, presented in a blog post, uses a variational principle to calculate the optimal strategy for bouncing a ball on a table with a given shape. The researchers claim that their approach can be used to solve problems that were previously unsolvable using traditional methods. They demonstrate the effectiveness of their approach by solving a classic problem in mathematical billiards, known as the 'optimal billiards problem', and finding a solution to a previously unsolved problem.
